More Repairs

(Posted on FB 12/15/19)

PROJECT 51: More repairs. Apparently, when the previous mechanic (and I'm being generous with that term) took the gearbox apart, he lost the hollow bolt that holds a spring-loaded brass plunger against the shifting rod to keep it from rattling. So, he found a rusty old half-inch bolt (which is the wrong thread) and mashed it down on the plunger and spring until it split the plunger apart. (I'm sure the shifter didn't rattle!) I was able to modify the bolt to look and fit correctly, and hollow it out to accept the new plunger that I made, along with a new spring. The shifter now looks and feels like it should. Next on the list: Fixing stripped threads in the cast-aluminum timing chain cover.
