Some Before and Afters

(Posted on FB 12/26/19)

PROJECT 51: Some Before and Afters. The generator (dynamo in Brit-speak) and starter-motor are shown before and after disassembly, inspection, and restoration. The generator is still missing its cooling fan (a new one is on the way). I'm guessing that Brutus-the-mechanic stuck a big screwdriver through the fan fins to hold the shaft while breaking the pulley nut free, bending the heck out of them in the process. He probably didn't feel that he needed extra generator cooling up in WA, so he just tossed it.
One of the mounting brackets on the driver-side running-board was broken away, so I fabricated a replacement from angle iron, and welded it in place.
The bolt that goes in the end of the crankshaft (and by which you can hand-crank the motor) was pretty chewed up. Obviously, if you don't have the right size socket for a bolt, you just use a pipe wrench, right? I was able to clean up the gouges in my lathe by turning the diameter down by about .100". After sandblasting I used gun-blue agent to etch in the black color.
